TUT SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

7 November 2011
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Lejeanne Marais on receiving the NATIONAL award for Sport Woman of the Year for the Tshwane University of Technology. She received this award at a glamourous function held in Tshwane for all the winners from the various campuses across South Africa. This is another highlight for her in a year where she was also a finalist in the Gauteng Sport Woman of the Year.

It just goes to show the talent we have and the opportunities figure skaters have in South Africa.

We wish Lejeanne well as she is leaving today for Romania to compete at the Crystal Skate competition in preparation for the Four Continents and World Championships to be held soon in the new year!

CAPE INTER PROVINCIALS

9-11 September 2011
We are very proud of our six skaters that represented Gauteng North at the recent Cape Inter Provincials. They returned with a gold medal, a Silver, 2 Bronze and 2 fourth placings, quite an achievement!

CUTTING EDGE CLUB

23 August 2011

Gauteng North Figure Skating is proud to announce the formation of its new ‘Cutting Edge Club’. This club has been created to introduce interested skaters to the world of figure skating. It will allow individuals to interact in a group environment, learning, practicing and discovering new skills, related to figure skating. Our professional coaches, will on a rotational basis, work with skaters in group classes, and hopefully inspire young athletes to choose figure skating, as their sport of choice.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of skating skills at all levels, and the club’s objectives are to provide:

1  A fun and safe skating experience for the beginner as well as the more advanced skater
2  To teach correct technique of the simple basic elements
3  To promote health and physical fitness
4  To enable all participants to achieve the skills necessary to either skate for fun or to move competently into a more competitive structure through private classes.

Classes will cost R400 per month to join the club and skaters will be able to choose either Saturday morning from 07h00 - 08h00 OR the Monday afternoon from 17h00 - 18h00.

Gauteng North is striving to create a province that all members are proud to be a part of. The Cutting Edge Club will provide a springboard for individuals to become part of our province and part of the Gauteng North family. Should you require further information regarding becoming a member, please don’t hesitate to contact either Janet Sailer or Christo Viljoen, who will be more than willing to answer any questions.

NEWSLETTER No. 2

Never underestimate the power of TIME!
It seems only yesterday that I typed the opening remarks of the first issue and suddenly a month has passed and we are left with only eleven months of 2011.
I hope everyone has settled into the academic and work year and that you have established your own unique rhythm in answer to its demands..
Even though it is the start of the year and it seems that nothing is happening, a lot has been done behind the scenes in preparation for the year. With this issue, a proposed year planner is attached, Formal Off-Ice Training has started, ice skating development has taken place, a new sporting body for federations in Gauteng North has been formed and Lejeanne has made history yet again by being the first figure skater to represent South Africa at the Winter Universiade in Turkey. We are truly blessed with a lovely sport with lots of opportunities. Keep on practicing and success is bound to be your partner....

Provincials took place at Kolonnade last night from 17h00 till late. Results are on the competitions page. More about this later.

MEMBER COMMUNICATION No. 8

can be downloaded here.

Issues dealt with include Ticket Sales Competition, Trophies, Official Practice Saturday morning 17th April with schedule and also the competiton schedule.

Assistance required
As the smallest province, we pride ourselves with the co-operation of all our members. The committee asks for assistance with the following in order to hold a successful competition.
We will be setting up at the rink from 15h30. Assistance is requested for carrying tables and chairs, setting up the judging area, as well as tables for sales and at the entrance.
During the competition we would appreciate help at the entrance and sales tables. These sales are a very important part of our income to offset the costs for this competition.
Afterwards we would appreciate assistance to clean up and put away all the computers, cabling, tables and chairs.
Thanking you in advance.

Ticket Sales Competition for GN Provincials:
The committee has decided to hold the Provincials Competition (Sun 18th April) ONLY on Sunday evening rather than split the competition into a morning and evening event. However, this came at a huge financial cost. We didn’t want to increase entry fees unduly, so we kindly request the assistance of the members to promote the competition. A nice TEDDY hamper is on offer to
skaters who sell their tickets.
They will be entered into a lucky draw for the teddy hamper. A prize for the MOST TICKETS SOLD is also on offer! Christo will be handing out the booklets to the parents at the rink.
Please return your tickets and entrance fees before 16th of April to either Elsa Lombaard or Christo Viljoen to be eligible for prizes.

COACHES TRAINING - MAY/JUNE 2010

With the kind assistance of Susan, we have managed to secure a top international coach, Zsolt Kerekes, for a two week coaching seminar at the Kolonnade.

Zsolt, a Hungarian currently coaching in the Netherlands, has recently had skaters finish in the top 24 at both the Junior and Senior World 2010. He has more than 30 years experience in ice skating, was part of the Romanian Olympic team, and has been a professional skater and coach since 1994.

The training would include both on and off ice training for the skaters, with both morning and evening sessions included.

The preliminary dates for the coaching are from 23 May - 6 June.  This is just before the June school holidays.  Although it would fall within the exams, we believe with proper foresight and preparation that this shouldn't pose too much of a problem (less time for the skaters to clean their rooms.....).  Extra ice during the evenings is easier to obtain.

This amazing opportunity is on offer to all our National skaters and by invitation by the committee to a maximum of 10 skaters. Please reply with the names of interested skaters as soon as possible in order to book your spot.

Although you are welcome to continue coaching during the sessions you are also most welcome as an observer during training (or to act as a translator....!).  We believe that this is an opportunity to both you and your skaters to gain valuable international exposure at a fraction of the cost to get it.

The cost of the two week course would be approximately R 4 000, depending on the number of skaters wishing to join. The final cut-off date for entry fees will be communicated as soon as we have the numbers for the course.

We will provide you with more information as it becomes available.

Kind regards,

The Gauteng North Committee

JAKARANDA CHILDRENS HOME GIFTS HANDOVER

Dear Member,

After hosting a hugely successful fun skate in aid of the Jacaranda Childrens Home, a few of us had the enviable privilege of handing over the gifts bags to more than 120 children on Saturday. These consisted of soft toys and much needed toiletries donated by you and we were (again) humbled by the fact that giving is much more rewarding than receiving.

Thanks to Chris, Lizette, Alicia & Charlize for joining us and helping to hand out the gifts, a major task with so many kids. Also, thanks for everybody's support at the fun skate and your generous donations. Lastly, a special word of gratitude to Ronel and her mother for purchasing the remaining requirements and then individually packing these gift bags in age groups; an invaluable effort towards the success of this event.

As acting chairperson I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Rian for his tremendous effort and time he sacrificed to be part of the committee the past few years.  The lessons learnt from him will be of immense help in future for us to guide the province.  It was a privilege to be able to learn from him and his moderate nature had a calming effect on us during the testing times of Nationals.  It is very unfortunate to lose him as a mentor and Shannon as a talented skater, but we wish them well and hope that we'll be able to welcome them back shortly in our midst. We'll keep him informed of our progress and look forward to seeing them every so often at the rink.

I wish to make a plea to everyone to make themselves available to serve on the committee for the next term as I have seen first hand that more hands lead to light work.

 Respectfully yours,

Christo
