2010 GAUTENG NORTH PROVINCIALS: Sun 18 Apr. Provincials took place at Kolonnade last night from 17h00 till late. Results are on the competitions page. Thanks to all those who gave of their time and expertise to ensure a smooth running event and especially to the judges and technical staff who travelled long distances to officiate at our event. MEETING WITH GAUTENG CENTRAL Representatives of Gauteng North met with the Gauteng Central Commitee in Rivonia on Saturday 17 April. Issues discussed were matters relating to the Sports Council; the usage of the harness at Kolonnade; skaters changing membership from one province to another and also new measures to ensure improved availability of judges and reservations for levels testing. More about this later. LEVELS TESTS MOVEDTO 2 MAY The Levels Test previous scheduled for 9 May has been brought forward to Sun. 02 May. MEMBER COMMUNICATION No. 8 can be downloaded here. Issues dealt with include Ticket Sales Competition, Trophies, Official Practice Saturday morning 17th April with schedule and also the competiton schedule. Assistance required Ticket Sales Competition for GN Provincials: COACHES TRAINING - MAY/JUNE 2010 With the kind assistance of Susan, we have managed to secure a top international coach, Zsolt Kerekes, for a two week coaching seminar at the Kolonnade. Zsolt, a Hungarian currently coaching in the Netherlands, has recently had skaters finish in the top 24 at both the Junior and Senior World 2010. He has more than 30 years experience in ice skating, was part of the Romanian Olympic team, and has been a professional skater and coach since 1994. The training would include both on and off ice training for the skaters, with both morning and evening sessions included. The preliminary dates for the coaching are from 23 May - 6 June. This is just before the June school holidays. Although it would fall within the exams, we believe with proper foresight and preparation that this shouldn't pose too much of a problem (less time for the skaters to clean their rooms.....). Extra ice during the evenings is easier to obtain. This amazing opportunity is on offer to all our National skaters and by invitation by the committee to a maximum of 10 skaters. Please reply with the names of interested skaters as soon as possible in order to book your spot. Although you are welcome to continue coaching during the sessions you are also most welcome as an observer during training (or to act as a translator....!). We believe that this is an opportunity to both you and your skaters to gain valuable international exposure at a fraction of the cost to get it. The cost of the two week course would be approximately R 4 000, depending on the number of skaters wishing to join. The final cut-off date for entry fees will be communicated as soon as we have the numbers for the course. We will provide you with more information as it becomes available. Kind regards, The Gauteng North Committee

Awesome!!! JAKARANDA CHILDRENS HOME GIFTS HANDOVER Dear Member, After hosting a hugely successful fun skate in aid of the Jacaranda Childrens Home, a few of us had the enviable privilege of handing over the gifts bags to more than 120 children on Saturday. These consisted of soft toys and much needed toiletries donated by you and we were (again) humbled by the fact that giving is much more rewarding than receiving. Thanks to Chris, Lizette, Alicia & Charlize for joining us and helping to hand out the gifts, a major task with so many kids. Also, thanks for everybody's support at the fun skate and your generous donations. Lastly, a special word of gratitude to Ronel and her mother for purchasing the remaining requirements and then individually packing these gift bags in age groups; an invaluable effort towards the success of this event. As acting chairperson I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Rian for his tremendous effort and time he sacrificed to be part of the committee the past few years. The lessons learnt from him will be of immense help in future for us to guide the province. It was a privilege to be able to learn from him and his moderate nature had a calming effect on us during the testing times of Nationals. It is very unfortunate to lose him as a mentor and Shannon as a talented skater, but we wish them well and hope that we'll be able to welcome them back shortly in our midst. We'll keep him informed of our progress and look forward to seeing them every so often at the rink. I wish to make a plea to everyone to make themselves available to serve on the committee for the next term as I have seen first hand that more hands lead to light work. Respectfully yours, Christo FUN SKATE GIFTS FOR JAKARANDA CHILDRENS HOME To All the skaters and family who made a great effort to contribute money and gifts at the fun skate for the “Jacaranda Children’s Home”, the gift bags are ready to be delivered. The bus is leaving Saturday, 23 January from the Kolonnade at 09H15 to the Children’s Home to give them their gift bags. The more the merrier!!! So hop on! The children of the Home will be happy to meet you. Come and be proud of what you achieved. Regards Elsa
